What is traveling fellowship program?

The AFSM travelling fellowship program is an active program aimed at promoting contact between various Asian countries, and is available to individual members of AFSM. The program is usually conducted once or twice a year, and successful applicants usually spend a few weeks travelling around Asia and visiting various sports medicine facilities.

How can you apply?

You should apply through your National Sports Medicine Association. Your application form should be signed by the president or secretary general of the national association and submit to AFSM secretariat with your recent CV. The issue will be discussed in AFSM Executive Committee meeting.

Guidelines

Candidates for the sports medicine fellowship:

1. A physician or scientist below the age of forty, at the time of application for the travelling fellowship.

2. An experience of no less than five years in the field of sports medicine and sports sciences with recommendation from the National Sports Medicine Association.

3. The candidate should prepare for two presentations in either clinical or research subjects during the travelling fellowship programme.

4. You will prepare the tickets of your trip. All the other expenses will be paid by the host countries. AFSM will pay US $500 per person for this program.

A suggested programme for the host country:

1. Visit to sports medicine centre with exposure to various disciplines such as sports traumatology and rehabilitation, exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sports biochemistry, sports psychology, etc.

2. Visit to sports training facilities and to be acquainted with unique features of elite athlete training and popular sports of the host country.

3. Visit to academic institutions in relation to clinical and research activities. The varieties may include sports injury clinic, operating room experience for surgeons, laboratories for scientists.

4. A symposium or seminar to allow the travelling fellows to present their papers and to interact with colleagues of the host countries.

5. Introduction to local cultural and social activities.

6. The travelling fellows may be accommodated in relatively inexpensive guest house, sports institute or host families. This should encourage interaction with the local group and to be familiar with the local culture.

 

Reports:

During year 2005 AFSM has organized Two traveling fellowship programs.
Asia-Asia - Date: 4-14 May 2005.
Itinerary: Hong Kong- Macao- Guang Zhu- Seoul- Tokyo.
The delegates were from: Oman, China, Thailand, Iran.

The travelers started their visit from Sports Institute of Hong Kong and after visiting several sports medicine centers in above mentioned regions, their trip was ended in Tokyo where they participated in 8th AFSM congress.

Asian- European Traveling Fellowship program - Date: October 2005.

Itinerary: Sheffield (UK), Hasselt (Belgium),Germany,Cyprus.
Travelers were from: India, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan.

The program started from sports medicine center in Sheffield and ended in European congress of sports medicine in Cyprus.

Next programs

Two Traveling Fellowship program will be run in 2006.

From West to East Asia

Itinerary: Hong Kong- Seoul – Tokyo- World Congress in Beijing.
Fellows from: Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Myanmar , Mongolia.
Date: June 2006.

From Eest to West Asia

Itinerary: Dubai- Muscat- Tehran- Asian congress in Riyadh.
Fellows from: Sri Lanka, Iran, Tajikistan, India.
Date: November 2006
