Sports Medicine is a relatively new branch of medicine which deals in prevention and treatment of physical injuries caused by exercise and sports. It also deals in general fitness of the athletes and provides facilities for rehabilitation from severe injuries. In the past, different physicians were hired for individual sports teams; however, as of 20th century a distinct entity in health care by the name of “Sports and Exercise Medicine” has emerged.

Asian Federation of Sports Medicine, under the supervision of “International Federation of Sports Medicine” has been providing awareness and services related to the field since 1990. It was formed during the 11th Asian Games that took place in Beijing. The idea of forming a dedicated organization for Asian countries was generated in 1987 in the FIMS’ Congress that took place in Amsterdam. It was basically more of a preparatory congress for the AFSM and had several Asian participants. In 1990, finally ASFM was officially founded and Prof Qu. was elected as the first president. For the next couple of years training courses took place in Philippines and China.
